KARACHI: Two more citizens were shot dead by robbers in Orangi Town and New Karachi areas on Friday, police and rescuers said.

SSP-West Dr Hafeezur Rehman Bugti told Dawn that two armed muggers riding a motorcycle arrived at a gas cylinder shop and demanded cash from two shopkeepers. As they put up resistance, the robbers opened fire on them and fled without any loot, he added.

The wounded were taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where Abid Husain, 60, died during treatment. Yusuf Mohammed, 38, was admitted for treatment and his condition was stated to be stable, added the SSP.

In the New Karachi area, a man was killed in a mosque when fleeing robbers started firing to disperse a mob chasing them.

New Karachi SHO Zahid Lodhi said that armed pillion riders arrived at a ‘factory’ adjacent to Gulzar-i-Madina Masjid in Sector-11-E, held the owner at gunpoint and snatched Rs200,000. As they were fleeing, the owner raised alarm and people inside and outside the mosque rushed towards the scene. This panicked the robbers who resorted to firing into the air in their bid to flee.

The SHO said that one of the bullets hit a citizen, identified as Nazeer, in the neck when he was watching the episode from the first floor of the mosque. He was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The robbers managed to escape with the looted cash.
