MOHMAND/SOUTH WAZIRISTAN: Two persons were killed as heavy rains triggered flash floods, damaging communication infrastructure and standing crops in parts of Mohmand and South Waziristan districts on Monday

An eight-year-old child, Ishaq Khan, drowned in a rainwater-filled pond in Khwezai tehsil, and 20-year-old Irfan was washed away by floodwaters in Pandiali tehsil of Mohmand district. The youth’s body was later retrieved.

Heavy downpour also caused damage to link roads and standing crops as flash floods submerged different areas, including Atokhel, Haider Kor, Chamarkand, Iqrab Dag, Halimzai and Babikhel, damaging several houses.

Floods also damaged vegetables.

Meanwhile, heavy monsoon rains damaged crops and orchards in different areas of Upper South Waziristan tribal district. The Chagmalai-Tangi Road remained closed to traffic due to landslides, troubling commuters.

Assistant commissioner Suhail told Dawn on Monday that machinery had been sent to clear the road. Floodwaters also damaged links roads in Lower South Waziristan.

The Wana-Gomal Zam Road also remained closed in Sheenkai area due to landslides. However, later machinery was used to remove the debris to reopen the road.
