RAHIM YAR KHAN: Mumtaz Mustafa, a member of the National Assembly (MNA) from NA-171 (Rahim Yar Khan) and a known jurist in the area passed away due to a heart attack in Islamabad on Monday morning. He was over 70.
Mustafa was recognized in the district for his legal expertise and commitment to public service. A family member confirmed that he had a heart condition for quite sometime.
An ambulance carrying his body was on way to Rahim Yar Khan at 10pm. His funeral prayers were scheduled at main Eidgah at 8.30 am on Tuesday (today), with burial at native village near Sardargarh.
In a tribute to Mustafa’s contributions to the legal profession, the District Bar Association declared a `day of mourning’ on Tuesday. Mustafa had also been a member of the Punjab Bar Council and president of RY Khan district bar.
He joined PTI a few years back and contested the general election for the first time from NA-171, a constituency dominated by the Makhdooms of Mianwali Qureshian since decades. His victory was described as a major upset in the district in the 2024 vote.
According to the NA Secretariat, Mustafa was residing at the Parliament Lodges where he breathed his last. MQM-P lawmaker Kahwaja Izhaarul Haq complained the ambulance could not reach Mustafa’s lodge to take him to the hospital as the cars of other members were parked on the road.
