KARACHI: The city administration on Monday decided to launch a special anti-polio campaign in high-risk areas of the metropolis from Aug 15.

A meeting, presided over by Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi at the Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), reviewed the arrangements for the eradication of poliovirus from the city after poliovirus had been detected in environmental samples in its seven districts.

It decided to administer polio drops to over one million children during the special drive. In this regard a comprehensive plan is being made to reach children and persuade parents to participate.

The meeting was attended among others by EOC Coordinator Irshad Sodhar, health department officials, representatives of the World Health Organisation, Unicef, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Rotary International besides senior officers of Pakistan Rangers.
