BAHAWALPUR: Qutabpur police claim to have averted the marriage of a minor girl with an elderly man at Muhammadpur Ghota village in Lodhran district on Tuesday.

According to police, they were informed on emergency helpline by a widow, Ms Amna, that three members of her in-laws’ family -- Rehan, Aziz and Ijaz -- were forcibly marrying her 14-year-old daughter to an old man.

Acting on the complaint, the police conducted a raid on the house of the suspects and arrested them.

SUSPECT KILLED: Mitroo police claimed that an arrested dacoity suspect was killed by his own accomplices during an encounter in Mailsi tehsil of Vehari district on Monday night.

The police said the suspect, Javed, was beingtaken for recovery of looted items in a dacoity case when the police team was allegedly attacked by his four accomplices.

They claimed that during an exchange of fire with the attackers, Javed was injured in the firing by his own accomplices and later died.

The police said Javed was wanted in as many as 54 cases registered at different police stations, including Lohari Gate, Lahore, Seatle Mari, Multan, Kahrorepucca Saddar and Mitroo.

His body was shifted to Mailsi THQ Hospital for the postmortem examination.

The police have registered a case against the four fleeing attackers.
