There was no edition of the paper on Aug 15, 1974, due to the Independence Day holiday. The following excerpt is from the previous day’s edition.

WASHINGTON: President Ford, rapturously applauded by an admiring Congress, last night [Aug 12] pledged continued detente abroad, a tough battle against inflation at home — and no more Watergates. Constantly interrupted by applause from legislators wearied by Nixon administration scandals, he declared: “There will be no illegal tapings, eavesdropping, buggings, or break-ins in my administration.” ...

President Ford said he would continue Mr Nixon’s policies of reconciliation with the Soviet Union and China, would continue the search for peace in the Middle East and would seek to improve America’s relations with its allies throughout the world. ...

In foreign policy, he made the following pledges: continuity in collaboration between the United States and the Atlantic Community and Japan; a deepening dialogue with the countries of Latin America; continued support for the security, independence and economic development of allies in Asia. ... Continuity of American diplomacy ... to bring about a just and lasting settlement in the Middle East. — News agencies
