KARACHI: A huge fire that broke out in an industrial unit in the SITE area on Friday morning was controlled after hour-long fire-fighting operation, rescuers said.
They said that no loss of life was reported. However, a fireman belonging to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) became unconscious during the rescue operation.
The SITE-A police said that the fire erupted in a plastic factory near Customs House.
Rescue-1122 Director General Dr Abid Shaikh told Dawn that they received information about the fire at around 9am. He said seven fire tenders managed to control the blaze at around 2:15pm.
KMC fireman Amir Yusuf was adversely affected by heavy smoke and he was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.
Rescue-1122 official Hassaan Khan told Dawn that almost 70 per cent of the factory material was gutted in the incident.
Regarding the cause of fire, he said that it was premature to comment on what had triggered the blaze.
However, factory administration told them that a high tension wire passing above the factory snapped and fell on a gunny bag inside the industrial unit that caught fire, the rescue official said, adding that the fire spread because of the presence of flammable material in the factory.
