PAKISTAN has long been struggling with extremist ideologies that are promoted by various militant groups. The geopolitical dynamics of South Asia, particularly the volatile situation in neighbouring Af- ghanistan, have spilled over into Pakistan. Despite serious and sustained efforts, challenges persist in achieving sustainable peace and security.

Over the last few years, the country has witnessed many tragic incidents that have underscored the threat of terrorism nationwide. It was against this background that the government announced its latest counter-terrorism plan, named the Operation Azm-i-Istehkam. Unfortunately, there have been certain misconceptions about the plan based on nothing but rumours. The fact is that the operation will be implemented nationwide, with no specific targeting of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

The fight against terrorism is a national undertaking, transcending politics, and is crucial for our future generations. Any politician engaging in negative politics against this initiative needs to be isolated.

To compare Azm-i-Istehkam with other previous kinetic operations, like Zarb-i-Azb and Rah-i-Nijaat, is baseless as the earlier such operations were aimed at physically displacing the terrorists from their strongholds where state authority was being constantly undermined. These operations necessitated large-scale displacement of local populations, and systematic clearance of the affected areas. The current strategy encompasses political, diplomatic, legal and infor- mational approaches, complementing on- going operations by all law-enforcement agencies.

Unfortunately, terrorism has profoundly impacted Pakistan for decades, exacting a heavy toll on its people, economy, as well as the social fabric.

Its eradication is not merely a priority, but a necessity for Pakistan’s stability, development and global image. Terrorism directly threatens national security by destabilising regions, undermining governance, and instilling fear among the people. Pakistan is not alone in its efforts to combat terrorism. Countries worldwide have undertaken significant operations to address terrorism within their respective borders.

In essence, these efforts vary widely in their scope, strategies and outcomes, reflecting diverse geopolitical circum- stances and security challenges.

Undoubtedly, and understandably, no country allows terrorists to destroy its peace and attack the innocent people. We need to have a zero-tolerance policy in place, and effective, stringent actions should be taken against terrorists and their backers.
