Spelling bees are a worldwide phenomenon famed for cultivating the love for language, and, as a bonus, aiding the participants’ academic progress, all the while in a supportive environment. True to its name, this competition involves memorising spellings, as well as the pronunciations, vowel placements and meanings of so many new and exciting words. The added challenge is public speaking, i.e. reciting the spelling aloud, which isn’t easy in most situations, let alone in front of so many people.
There is no doubt that spelling bee competitions offer students rich opportunities for personal and academic growth, with benefits that extend far beyond the competition itself.
The first and foremost importance of taking part in a spelling bee competition is the immense improvement in vocabulary, since students need to learn great many words, their meaning, pronunciation, origin and proper usage. And a good vocabulary in English is a great asset, in not just studies, but in all aspects of life as this makes both verbal and written communication better.
During a spelling bee competition, in order to answer within a set time limit, students need to think critically and quickly under pressure. The process of recalling the correct spelling of words, understanding their etymology, and applying them in a meaningful context helps sharpen the mind, enhances memory, focus and problem-solving abilities.
But spelling bees are as tough as competitions can get — they can be intimidating and nerve-wracking, especially since there is a time limit for spelling the word. The whole exercise helps the participants learn how to control their nerves in tense situations, all the while remaining mentally alert to come up with the correct answers.
Whether you win or lose, spelling bee competitions are exciting events that leave positive impacts on the participants that remain for a long time.
