FAIR TRIAL

FAIR TRIAL: The recent tragic road accident in Karachi has added to the list of tragedies caused by the disgusting elitist mindset. Accounts by eyewitnesses, including those from policemen, suggest that the driver was intoxicated at the time of the accident. The public really wants a fair trial. The judiciary must show that no one in society is above the law.

ADJUSTING LOANS: I happen to have a suggestion for the world leaders who give expensive gifts to our politicians. Instead of giving them the gifts, they should adjust the cost of the gifts against the loans that Pakistan has to pay them back. Secondly, the world leaders should discourage their Pakistani counterparts from visiting their countries. They should encourage online meetings.

AN EMERGING TREND: Never in my life had I seen a child practising a javelin throw till recently when I saw a child making a javelin out of a stick, surrounded by other children who had gathered in a local playground. It was nothing but a tribute to the performance of Arshad Nadeem at the Olympics as well as to his dedication and determination. The growing trend of javelin throwing is incredible as it is pushing our youth to look beyond merely cricket and football. Undoubtedly, the credit for the turnaround goes to Arshad Nadeem, who won the gold medal at the recent Olympics despite having meagre resources.

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: The Sindh government announced a public holiday on Aug 20 on account of the annual urs of Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. People who wished to attend the event could have been given a casual leave instead of shutting down the whole province. The nation has to work hard to overcome its economic problems. Public holidays are not going to help us in any way. Let us do away with them.
