LAKKI MARWAT: A policeman was martyred when armed men attacked him in Nawerkhel area of Lakki Marwat district on Wednesday.

A police official said constable Waqar Ahmad left his home in the morning for his duty station. “As he reached near a shop in the village, armed motorcyclists came there and opened fire, killing him on the spot,” he said.

He said the assailants fled the place, and the body was shifted to the Government City Hospital. “After the incident, a large police contingent reached the rural locality and launched a search for the attackers,” he said.

The official said deputy commissioner Fahad Wazir, district police officer Taimur Khan, SP investigations Murad Khan, army officials, political and social leaders and relatives attended the funeral prayers of the deceased policeman offered at the police lines in the District Headquarters Complex, Tajazai.

Deputy commissioner along with police and military officials placed floral wreaths on his coffin, while a police contingent presented a guard of honour to their fallen colleague.

Later, the martyred constable was laid to rest with full official honour at a graveyard in Nawerkhel area.

Separately, a man was shot dead and his brother and father were injured when armed men attacked them in the Kurrum Par area here on Wednesday.

The police said Ali Rehman, 32, his brother, Mohammad Wali Rehman, 29, and father, Abdul Rehman, 70, had gone to the weekly fair in Landiwah area for shopping.

They said their rivals, including Sardar, Hayatullah and Rehmatullah armed with pistols came there and sprayed them with bullets after beating and injuring, Abdul Rehman with butts of pistols. Police said Wali was critically injured and died instantly, while Ali and his father sustained bullet injuries.

Injured Ali told Dadiwala police they had a dispute over a loan with the attackers.

Also, a teenage girl was murdered allegedly by her cousin after her father rejected his proposal to marry his daughter with him in Zerjanu area of Lakki on Wednesday.

The police said that the girl, 17, was killed on the spot when her cousin, Waheed Khan opened fire on her near her house. Aslam Khan, 60, father of the slain girl, told the police that the incident occurred when his daughter was returning home from the house of her uncle.
