GCU dress code

Published September 6, 2024

IN a recent decision that has sparked a widespread debate, the administration of Government College University (GCU) Lahore notified a new dress code for the students, banning T-shirts and jeans for both male and female students. While the intention behind this measure may be well-meaning, the students have shown outrage over the decision.

Clothing is a fundamental aspect of human identity that allows individuals to express their personality and style. By imposing limitations on what the students can wear, the administration is impeding the university’s own long and cherished culture.

This action has posed many questions that need to be answered by the admi- nistration. What would the students wear during extracurricular activities on the campus? Is the measure not going to turn the university into a school? Will this ban not create a negative and discriminatory environment on the campus?

Moreover, the constant worry about compliance with the dress code can be a source of stress and anxiety, potentially impacting students’ academic perfor-mance. The intention behind these actions is clearly to maintain a safe and equal environment for everybody, which is well-intended. However, instead of imposing restrictions on student attire, the university should focus on fostering a positive and inclusive campus culture. This can be achieved by promoting respect and understanding among all concerned.
