KARACHI: A private security guard and a passer-by were killed when robbers opened fire to loot a cash van on main Rashid Minhas Road near Millennium Mall on Friday. However, one of the robbers was gunned down in a shoot-out with a police patrol, police said.

The police said that a van belonging to a known builder of the city was carrying cash from SITE area on Friday afternoon. One private security guard and other staff were present in the van.

When it reached Millenium Mall, three suspects riding a motorcycle resorted to firing on the vehicle in their attempt to loot the cash. The private security guard and a passer-by were killed in the firing and the vehicle stopped, after which the suspects looted the cash.

However, as they were fleeing, a police patrol chased the suspects and in an ensuing exchange of gunfire killed one of the robbers, arrested his two accomplices and recovered Rs105 million looted amount.

Policed Surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed identified the passer-by as Abdul Waheed, 55, and the guard as Khawar Mubeen, 32.

The incident angered area residents who protested on main Rashid Minhas Road.

Because of the protest, the flow of traffic was adversely affected on the key road leading to Drigh Road and Stadium Road from Dalmia.
