KARACHI: A worker of the outlawed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), who suffered bullet wounds in an exchange of gunfire between two groups in Gulbahar last month, died during treatment at a hospital on Sunday, officials said.

Two persons were killed and nine others injured when violence broke out in Gulbahar a day before chehlum of Imam Husain.

An ASWJ spokesperson said that deceased Muhammad Naeem was associated with the party’s Taiser Town chapter.

He said that he suffered bullet injuries when an ASWJ rally passing through the Gulbahar area came under fire. He was admitted at a private hospital where he died, he added.

The funeral prayer was held at a local mosque in Taiser Town on Sunday. It was attended by his family, a large number of area people and ASWJ leaders including Allama Aurangzeb Farooqi and Allama Rab Nawaz Hanafi.

The ASWJ demanded that the Sindh government immediately arrest the killers of their workers.

Police sources said that a case was registered on behalf of the state under murder and terrorism sections of the Pakistan Penal Code and Anti-Terrorism Act.

Youth shot dead in ‘targeted attack’

A young man was shot dead in a suspected targeted attack off Superhighway late on Saturday night, police said.

The SITE-Superhighway Industrial Area police said that Ghulam Rasool, 35, was killed at Janjal Goth near Yaadgar Masjid.

The police said that he was on his way home when armed assailants riding a motorbike fired two shots and rode away. He died on the spot.

The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

A police officer said it appeared to be a targeted killing incident as killers did not take away any valuable from him.

The victim originally hailed from KP.
