Any child who cannot read a simple text by the age of 10 is considered to be in learning poverty, a condition affecting about 70pc of 10-year-olds in low- and middle-income countries, potentially leading to a staggering loss of $21 trillion in lifetime earnings globally, according to the World Economic Forum
