TAX EVASION

TAX EVASION: This is with reference to the editorial ‘Traders’ strike’ (Aug 29). It is strange that most people are not aware that evasion of taxes is a punishable crime. The only way to deal with the strikers is to treat them like terrorists. Non-filers particularly should be dealt with harshly, preventing them from voting as well as travelling abroad and making them pay 50 per cent extra in indirect taxes. This is the only way to make them see reason.

HARASSING VISITORS: A parking fee of Rs50 is being charged from visitors for parking their cars in the main street close to a leading hospital in Karachi’s Clifton area. I tried to inquire about the authority in charge of it, but the person collecting the so-called parking fee had no idea.Even the security staff of the hospital were unaware of this illegal charge. The matter needs an immediate investigation.

BATTERY STATIONS: Battery Exc-hange Stations present a promising solution for reducing the country’s energy burden. These kiosks, installed at fuel stations, offer fully charged batteries for electric bikes and scooters. Users can swap their depleted batteries for fresh ones at a minimal cost. Petrol pumps across Pakistan could easily utilise the existing charging infrastructure to fast-charge motorbike batteries. Electric conversion kits, now available for less than $50, allow petrol motorcycles to switch to electric or hybrid power with minimal modifications.

ASSERTING THE PRESENCE: The utility of the Sindh Food Authority (SFA) has remained questionable. However, after a long hiatus, the SFA has finally decided to assert its presence, and launch operations against culprits across the province. It will rescue the public at large. Moreover, to make people aware of food safety and quality, campaigns should also be conducted so that they may keep a check on illegal activities.
