Deplorable remarks

Published September 11, 2024

PAKISTAN’s political sphere, vitiated by ever-increasing sexism, is a space where decency is in short supply. Although every political party has its band of repeat offenders, KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur’s hideous remarks about the Punjab CM and female journalists during his speech at the recent PTI rally betrayed extraordinary uncivility. Mr Gandapur, who wears chauvinism on his sleeve, was speaking about his determination to hold a PTI power show in Punjab when he singled out Maryam Nawaz: “We as Pathans come with dhols and even a baraat”, belying deep contempt for a woman’s agency and power. His innuendo-filled derision also extended to women journalists, as he made an uncouth remark quoting a Punjabi song. This strategic dollop of misogyny aims to belittle women’s position and work, police opinions and erode their stature and participation in the public space whereby a woman’s contribution to society becomes indiscernible. The fact that politicians deploy brazen sexism and use chauvinistic and offensive language is troubling; it sanctions misogyny and discrimination.

The prevailing gender gap in key areas of national life should force lawmakers to accept that such disparaging views have far-reaching effects as they keep women out of the public sphere. Regressive attitudes and patriarchy also harm men in multilayered forms, which limits development. Besides, Mr Gandapur’s bravado has left his party red-faced; condemnations poured in from all political quarters and reporters covering the National Assembly staged a walkout with journalist bodies slamming the slanderous attack on the media, particularly women. Though the PTI chairman issued an apology in the house, it is a matter of grave concern that Imran Khan reportedly defended Mr Gandapur’s deplorable remarks. Every representative has to work towards increased gender consciousness with accountability for those who weaken the political culture by promoting a male-centric environment. All parliamentarians should resolve to censure sexist language regardless of who uses it. It is time disrespect for women came with consequences.
