In the bustling city of Karachi, lived two brothers, Ahmed and Shafiq, each with their distinct nature and personalities. Ahmed was a cool and outgoing kid, while Shafiq was a silent observer and quite wise for his age.

Ahmed was always involved and occupied in football games and competitions, as he was the most outstanding player in his college team. Unfortunately, his interest cost him his studies and he failed his intermediate examination very badly.

Out of frustration, he lay on the couch in despair, complaining to his brother, who was silently reading a book.

“I don’t understand, Shafiq. I failed the exam despite burning the midnight oil studying. The examiners must have been cruel; they must have deducted my genuine marks. I just know it!” he grumbled.

“Ahmed, take a deep breath, you have been cursing the examiner for a long time,” said Shafiq calmly.

“You can calm yourself Shafiq, because you just got lucky enough to pass your examination with flying colours,” sniffed Ahmed in a very envious manner.

Shafiq instantly figured out Ahmed’s intentions, but being his brother, he decided to help Ahmed out of his misery.

The next day, Shafiq urged Ahmed to submit his re-examination form. Later that day, Ahmed learned about the annual football championship and his coach encouraged him to register as an official member of the All-Sindh Colleges Team.

When Ahmed came home that night, he was perplexed. Noticing his brother’s unusual behaviour, Shafiq asked what the matter was.

“I don’t know Shafiq, I cannot decide whether I should focus on my studies or football career,” Ahmed said in a sorrowful tone.

Hearing his brother’s frustration about his career choices, Shafiq came up with an idea and explained that Ahmed could pursue both paths if he directed his efforts properly.

Shafiq quickly grabbed Ahmed’s football and three books from the shelf, for the subjects in which Ahmed had received poor marks. Ahmed looked on in surprise.

Shafiq placed the football on the table in front of Ahmed and tried to balance the books on it, but despite his efforts, he failed. He then explained to his brother that if he didn’t manage his responsibilities in a balanced way and also in the right way, no matter how hard he tried, he would not succeed.

“Then what am I supposed to do?” asked Ahmed desperately.

“Place three books on top of each other and then put a ball on the uppermost book,” Shafiq instructed.

Ahmed easily balanced the ball above the books. He quickly understood the lesson Shafiq was trying to teach him.

“Now I see that if I plan my days properly, I’ll have enough time to prepare for my re-examination and practice for the annual football event,” Ahmed said, while giving a high-five to his brother warmly.

The next day, he registered for the football team and, at home, he organised his daily schedule to include football practice at a nearby club after college and exam preparation by subject.

Shafiq was pleased to have helped his brother with his advice.

Ahmed confidently passed his examination and led his team to victory in the championship. Later, his parents supported his participation in international championships.

A few years later, Shafiq became a bank manager after completing his ACCA, while Ahmed, having graduated on a scholarship from a German university, joined the official football league.

Their combined achievements highlight the impact of determination and wise counsel. From overcoming challenges to reaching new heights, their journey exemplifies the rewards of dedication and support.
