PESHAWAR: People belonging to merged districts have announced to hold a grand peace jirga in Peshawar on Sept 25 to highlight the problems being faced by the tribesmen.

Addressing a news conference at the Peshawar Press Club here on Monday, chairman of Tribal Rights Movement, Khyber district, Shah Faisal Afridi said the event was aimed to discuss recommendations for restoration of lasting peace, initiation of development schemes in tribal regions and implementation of the promised reforms package.

On the occasion, Faisal Afridi, who belongs to Jamaat-i-Islami, said his party would incorporate these recommendations into its manifesto and continue efforts for peace and prosperity of the merged areas.

He accused the government of violating the rights of tribal people enshrined under the 25th Constitutional Amendment, and exploiting the region’s mineral resources.

He expressed solidarity with the tribal people and expressed JI’s resolve to continue struggle for their rights.

He said Jamaat chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman would be the chief guest at the jirga, stating, “The event will bring together political, social, and religious leaders to discuss the future of tribal districts.”

Mr Afridi condemned the incidents of violence in tribal areas and urged law enforcement agencies to take responsibility for restoring peace and promoting economic stability in the region.

“Jamaat will continue its efforts to highlight the issues faced by the people of merged districts,” he said. He asked the Pakhtuns to forge unity in their ranks against the exploitation of their mineral resources and forced displacement of tribal people.
