‘Bilawal trying to build consensus on constitutional package’

KARACHI: The Pakistan Peoples Party on Saturday celebrated the 36th birthday of its chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari in the metropolis and other cities and towns of the province.

At an event held at the Arts Council to celebrate Mr Bhutto-Zardari’s birthday, PPP-Sindh president Nisar Khuhro said that the party chairman was playing a vital role to create a consensus among political parties on the constitutional amendment package.

He said that the PPP leadership wanted a federal constitutional court and truth and reconciliation commission as agreed by major political parties in the Charter of Democracy.

He said that the party leadership was making efforts to create a consensus among the political parties on the constitutional amendments. “Efforts will continue until a consensus is reached,” he added.

Mr Khuhro said that the PPP wanted the implementation of the remaining points of the Charter of Democracy, which was the mission of slain former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

The PPP provincial chief said that the a large number of cases were pending disposal before the Supreme Court and the amendments were being brought for the establishment of the constitutional court to reduce the backlog of cases.

Mr Khuhro said that the party’s position over the province’s share under the Water Accord was clear and the Sindh Assembly had taken up the issue of water shortage.

“No one will be allowed to steal the water from the province’s share,” he added.

He said that the provincial assembly had passed a resolution on the direction of the PPP chairman against the removal of image of Mohenjo Daro from currency notes.

Speaking on the occasion, PPP-Sindh general secretary Waqar Mehdi said that Mr Bhutto-Zardari had shown political insight in a short period of time.

Mr Mehdi said that the leadership of the country should come from among the people, adding that the PPP would emerge victorious in the next general election and Mr Bhutto-Zardari would be the next prime minister.

PPP-Karachi president Saeed Ghani said that there was no one else who understood the country’s problems like Mr Bhutto-Zardari.

The party leaders congratulated Mr Bhutto-Zardari on his birthday and later a cake was also cut by the office-bearers.

Meanwhile, the PPP chairman cut his birthday cake in a ceremony held at Bilawal House.

His sister, Aseefa, their aunt, Faryal Talpur, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, former CM Syed Qaim Ali Shah, provincial ministers, PPP lawmakers and others were also present.
