PESHAWAR, April 3: Three newly appointed additional judges of the Peshawar High Court took oath of office here on Monday. Chief Justice Tariq Pervez Khan administered the oath to Justice Raj Muhammad Khan, Justice Said Maroof Khan and Justice Hamid Farooq Durrani.
With the appointment of new judges the number of PHC judges has risen to 14, still one short of the sanctioned strength of 15 judges.
MORE JUDGES: Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Tariq Pervez Khan on Monday dispelled an impression that the judiciary had provided protection to dictatorship in the country and said that it always strived to hold the supremacy of law.
Talking to journalists after inaugurating the website of the Peshawar High Court Bar Association, the chief justice said that the impression created by some political parties was not based on facts.
“There is no proof that the judiciary has ever provided protection to dictators,” he said.
The chief justice said that although there was one vacancy in the high court, a summary had been moved for appointing four additional judges to tackle the issue of pending cases.
He said the government had agreed in principle to enhance the number of judges in the court.
Speaking to lawyers at the inauguration ceremony, he termed healthy relationship between the bar and the bench vital for dispensation of justice.
“A strong bar is vital for the independence and strength of judiciary,” the chief justice said.
He donated books worth Rs70,000 to the bar’s library.
PHCBA president Iqbal Khan Mohmand and general secretary Asthagfirullah Khan expressed the hope that the chief justice would continue to support healthy activities of the association.
