Every day, we enter our classroom, engage in chitchat and talk about random things with our friends. The teacher, who enters to give us a lecture and guide us, is often seen as just another teacher of this or that subject. They come, give lessons and leave.

But have you ever stopped to think about them beyond their role in teaching? Have you ever considered their life, their responsibilities or their daily routine?

Perhaps not. Teachers are human too. They aren’t just delivering lectures and grading papers; they are guides who clear obstacles from our path, beacons of light, guiding us through academic challenges and supporting us in the ups and downs of everyday life.

For many teachers, it is not just a profession, but something that adds meaning to their life. It’s not merely about receiving a pay cheque at the end of the month, rather, it is the sole purpose of their life.

This Teachers’ Day, let’s acknowledge and value their unwavering commitment and their profound impact on their students’ lives. So, let’s unleash the myriad ways a teacher touches a student’s heart and creates a lasting impact on their lives.

The academic architect

Teachers are the pillars of a students’ academic development. From designing engaging lesson plans to devising comprehensive course outlines, they make classroom learning fun! You don’t realise it, but teachers, who make things interesting for you every time they come in the class, after having done their homework for it. They observe each student’s diverse needs and ensure that their teaching strategies are relatable, adaptable and interactive. They put in great effort to prepare for the lessons beforehand to make complex concepts easy for you to understand. Seeing you thrive is all they want.

Emotional support

We all know that a teacher’s role is not limited to giving lectures and checking your work; it extends beyond the four walls of the classroom. Throughout the academic year, they form bonds with each student, noticing when someone isn’t fully present or is having trouble. This is then that they step in, offering advice and ensuring both your mental and physical well-being.

I’m sure many of you would agree when I say that you may have had a teacher in your life with whom you developed a strong bond of friendship and understanding, someone you could share both your good and bad days with.

Life coach

There is no doubt that teachers are synonymous with being life coaches; they help us navigate the challenges of growing up. They understand that classroom learning is not just about achieving better grades or higher marks, but about imparting valuable life lessons and instilling skills that help students become resilient and confident, enabling them to face life’s challenges fearlessly.

By helping students recognise their strengths and overcome their fears, teachers inspire and motivate them, turning each setback into a stepping stone toward achieving their dreams. Through encouragement and constructive feedback, teachers often boost students’ confidence, paving the way for a brighter future.

Role model

Most of us are so inspired by these unwavering personalities in our lives that we make them our role models. I believe you must have one or two who have left a lasting impression on you, inspiring you to follow in their footsteps as you grow up. It’s not just their teaching abilities, but also the way they carry themselves, the way they share, speak and their overall outlook on life. I think everyone can agree that, if it weren’t for the efforts, guidance and care of that affectionate and committed teacher, you may not have realised your true potential or pursued your goals in life.

Challenges of today

Teachers today face numerous hurdles and issues in their journey of teaching such as rapidly evolving technology, which requires them to integrate digital tools in their teaching while also addressing the diverse abilities of their students. Teachers tackle all these challenges with apt skills.

Staying aligned with the changing dynamics of teaching while keeping a work-life balance can be daunting. Being a teacher is no small feat. Devoted teachers are continuously thinking about the progress and well-being of their students. The best part is that their support isn’t confined within the four walls of the classroom; they are committed to be there for their students, eager to meet their needs, no matter where they are.

This isn’t merely a job for them; it’s their passion that fuels them every day. Nothing would make them happier than watching their students bloom, both academically and personally.

Ways to appreciate

As we honour Teachers’ Day, let’s pay tribute to our enthusiastic, empathetic and wonderful teachers who help us become the best versions of ourselves. Send them a thoughtful message, write a handmade thank-you card or simply let them know that they are valued and cared for, and that they play a meaningful role in our lives. Remember to respect them always and heed their advice.

So here’s to all the teachers who motivate, guide and uplift us. We are truly grateful for all your efforts. You hold a special place in our hearts and are meant to be cherished forever!

Happy Teachers’ Day!
