KARACHI: Four members of a family, who had gone for a picnic at Manora Islanad, drowned in the sea on Saturday, police said and rescuers said.

Mauripur SHO Shabbir Husain said that six family members, including women, had gone on a picnic at Manora beach from their home in Federal B Area, Block 9. They were taking a dip in the sea when strong waves swept away four of them.

Rescue workers, including divers, tried to save the victims but in vain. Later, they managed to recover bodies of three victims — two sisters and their brother.

They were identified as Hafsa Imam, 20, Saba Imam, 19, and Maaz Imam, 24.

The police said that efforts were underway to recover the body of the fourth victim, identified as Mustafa Aftab, 24. However, the operation was stopped after the sunset and it would resume again in the morning, they added.

The SHO said Mustafa was brother-in-law of the drowned siblings.

Drowned boy’s body found

The body of a minor boy, who drowned in a drain near Sohrab Goth on Friday, was recovered on Saturday, rescue workers said.

They said that two children were playing with an electric wire at the bank of the drain when they suffered an electric shock and fell in the drain. Area people rushed to the scene and managed to rescue 12-year-old Ismail Fakhar. However, Suleman, 10, drowned as the flow of water in the drain swept him away.

A spokesperson for Rescue-1122 said that the body of Suleman was recovered by its divers in the evening.
