THATTA: An extraordinary security check was launched in Turkish Colony of Makli town on Sunday to, what police described, “cleanse the locality of criminal elements coming from outside the town”.

The ‘comprehensive security survey’ was started on a directive issued by Thatta SSP Dr Mohammad Imran Khan. The SDPO of Thatta is leading the exercise involving a house-to-house search by women police personnel, escorted by their male colleagues.

According to the police, “advanced search equipment” were being used to detect suspicious elements. Data of each and every household and its occupants was being compiled for computation with families’ status (owner or tenant) duly mentioned against their identity.

“Additionally, security checkpoints have been established at key entry and exit points to check credentials of everyone entering or leaving the colony,” the police said.

The SSP said that the exercise was aimed at intensifying efforts to curb activities of criminals, including drug peddlers, in the colony. He said the personnel engaged in the exercise had been asked to ensure regular updating of the record pertaining to the new residents of the colony.

“A crackdown on suspicious elements and criminals has also been ordered,” said the SSP.
