HYDERABAD: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Sindh president Nisar Ahmed Khuhro has said that Indus River System Authority (Irsa) Act, 1992, cannot be amended in the presence of Sindh Assembly’s unanimously passed resolution against the move.
Khuhro said at a press briefing on the party’s Oct 18 programme in Hyderabad at the party leader Saghir Qureshi’s residence on Thursday that new canals over Indus River were unacceptable.
Khuhro welcomed federal government’s decision to end agreements with some of the independent power producers and said that PPP was supporting present government even without demanding its share in federal cabinet.
PPP wanted implementation of the Water Apportionment Accord, 1991, and no cut in Sindh’s water share, he said. Sindh Assembly had forestalled attack on Sindh’s share in water by adopting unanimous resolution against proposed amendment to Irsa Act, 1992.
He said that judicial reforms should be made and constitutional court should be set up to reduce pressure on Supreme Court. Charter of democracy included establishment of constitutional court as well as truth and reconciliation body, which should also implemented, he said.
He maintained that judicial system had visible flaws which could be rectified through judicial reforms. Earlier, amendments to the constitution were brought without consensus, he said.
He said that 180 workers lost their lives in bomb attacks on homecoming reception of their leader Benazir Bhutto on Oct 18, 2007. Benazir herself had written an application for the registration of FIR but it was not lodged and police filed it only after court’s orders, he said.
