MANSEHRA: Residents on Friday complained about the teachers’ vacancies in girls’ primary schools of Tanawal area here and insisted that most schools had just one teacher.

They demanded the early filling of those positions to serve the cause of girls’ education in the region.

“Posts of teachers have long been lying vacant in most primary schools for girls in Tanawal, adversely affecting education of students,” former tehsil councillor Mohammad Aslam told reporters in Pulrah area.

Accompanied by a group of residents, Mr Aslam said the PTI government in the province claimed to have reformed the education sector and provided educational institutions with facilities, but the ground reality belied those claims.

“The government primary schools for girls in Mohar Kalan and Chatta Deri areas have just one teacher each, adversely affecting the children’s education,” he said.

The residents demanded the early filling of those vacancies.

HELD: Police have arrested a councillor and her husband for allegedly selling women.

“We have recovered a young girl swindled by a gang from here and sold to a visually impaired person in Chakwal area of the Punjab province,” police investigator Bashir Awan told reporters on Friday.

He said the police arrested village councillor Dilshad Bibi and her husband, Khawaj Mohammad, in Malkana area of Oghi tehsil over the matter and shifted them to the police station for investigation on the complaint of resident Dilbar Shah.

The official said the couple allegedly sold more than 25 women from here in Chakwal.

He said the recovered woman, who was sold for Rs150,000, had accused the couple of trafficking her and threatening to kill her during custody.

The official said the Mansehra police were fulfilling legal formalities to seek the Punjab police’s help for arresting the other members of the gang.
