THIS is with reference to the report ‘Former NA speaker Illahi Bukhsh Soomro passes away’ (Oct 10). A many of calm composure, Mr Soomro was widely regarded as a principled gentleman. Even his critics and political opponents praised his qualities of head and heart. Though he appeared humble and simple in his manners, he did not shy away from expressing views openly.
I cherish some personal memories that are associated with him, particularly when he lost the election in Shikarpur in 1988. I wrote him a candid letter, analysing the causes of his electoral loss, which I attributed to his lack of connection with the common voter. In his handwritten reply dated Nov 30, 1988, he responded with his characteristic calm.
Mr Soomro will long be remembered for his significant role in having the infamous Press and Publications Ordinance (PPO) repealed, which had stifled press freedom since the 1960s. His efforts to lift this draconian law will be cherished as one of his landmark achievements, enabling gre-ater freedom of expression in the country.
