KARACHI: A young man, who was shot at and wounded during a clash between two sectarian groups in Korangi on Sunday night, died during treatment at a hospital on Tuesday, police and hospital officials said.

The outlawed Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) claimed that the deceased was their worker in the Awami Colony area.

The Awami Colony police said five persons had suffered bullet wounds while a sixth one was stabbed and injured when two groups clashed at Imambargah Wali Hassan.

The injured were identified as Junaid Qasim, 25, Syed Raza Mohsin, 17, Sajid Sajjad, 24, Adil Anwar, 26, Hammad Khan, 22 and Jaffer Qasim, 25.

They were shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where Junaid died during treatment on Tuesday morning, police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed said. He was a tailor by profession.

Awami Colony SHO Mohammed Wakeel said the police had registered two separate FIRs against the members of both the groups and arrested several persons.

The ASWJ in a statement said that the funeral prayer for the deceased worker was held in a local mosque and he was laid to rest in Bagh-i-Korangi graveyard.

Meanwhile, an ASWJ spokesperson said that the police had also nominated their central president, Allama Aurangzeb Farooqi, in the case, despite the fact that he was in Jacobabad at the time of the incident.

The group warned the government of staging a protest outside Chief Minister House if their leader’s name was not removed from the FIR.
