Chaos in Lahore

THIS is with reference to the report “FIA identifies journalists, TikTokers for spr-eading ‘fake’ rape story” (Oct 18). The current hype on conventional and social media platforms, and the anarchy on roads related to the alleged incident in Lahore has generated a great deal of controversy and public outcry. Adding fuel to the fire, students of the college in question have apparently been instigated to indulge in violence as a form of ‘protest’.

Unfortunately, the prevalent chaos in Lahore that has resulted in large-scale arrest of violent protesters is despite the fact that the ‘victim’ family has issued a video statement, with the father clarifying that his daughter had suffered a spinal injury as a result of a fall. He has even presented the girl’s medical records to negate the allegations.

Besides, the provincial chief minister also held a press conference where the girl could also be seen sitting, negating the allegations. One wonders why there continued to be anarchy on the roads.

Moreover, the Punjab government has also formed a high-level committee to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged incident.

Having witnessed the current incident, it is rather imperative that the public acts wisely to filter misinformation to avoid being misled by malicious propaganda disseminated by anti-state elements.

Besides, as stressed by the editorial ‘More questions’ (Oct 17), the government must ensure transparency in the whole process. On its part, the national media must also practice responsible reporting in order to ensure the public is provided the correct information. To dispense justice and protect the rights of all parties concerned, responsible reporting is crucial.
