Good news for GB

THE government of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) has decided to establish a special economic zone in the region to facilitate foreign and local investors. It is, indeed, a great step towards ameliorating the economic condition of the region.

The land required for building has been allotted by the government, and further development is likely to start soon. The government will also start one-window operation to facilitate investment in GB. This will be great as the natural resources of the region are still untapped. People will be able to invest in many other sectors as well, such as tourism, agriculture and businesses. This will be a win-win situ-ation for both the investors and the local population. The youth will get more job opportunities, while the public will enjoy better and improved facilities.

The keen interest shown by the Chinese to invest in GB can further boost the relationship between the two countries. Chinese investment in natural resources and agriculture of the region will surely have a booming effect on the GB economy. The use of Chinese technology will work wonders. This initiative will also bolster people-to-people relations.

To turn these possibilities into reality, the government of GB needs to take some concrete steps, like ensuring the security of investors and workers, especially those of Chinese origin. Only then can the government bring investment to the region.
