LAHORE: Muzammil Murtaza upset top seed Aqeel Khan to qualify for the men’s singles semi-finals of the Sheheryar Malik Memorial Pakistan Open Tennis Championship here on Thursday.

Though Aqeel tried his best to avoid the upset in the match which went to full distance, in-form Muzammil fought well against his experienced rival to win the match 6-7, 7-5, 6-4.

Mohammad Abid, who comfortably defeated Abu­b­akar Talha 6-3, 6-3, also reached the semi-finals.

Barkatullah also secured his place in the next round after Yousuf Khalil retired following a tight first set which ended 6-7.

In another three-set thriller, Mohammad Shoaib Khan made a comeback after dropping the first set to overcome Abdullah Adnan 6-7, 6-0, 6-1 to complete the men’s singles semi-finals line-up.

On the women’s side, top seed Ushna Sohail and Noor Malik made the final after winning their respective singles semi-finals.

Ushna cruised past Mehaq Khokhar 6-0, 6-0 while Noor outclassed Sheeza Sajid 6-4, 6-2.

Seniors 40+ doubles: Talha Waheed/Sheheryar Salamat bt Arif Feroze/Tariq Sadiq 6-2, 6-3.

Seniors 65+ doubles: Waqar Nisar/Inam-ul-Haq bt Saeed Khan/Malik Imtiaz 6-3, 6-1; Asad Niaz/Kamran Mir bt Ghazanfar/Mohammad Babar 6-0, 6-4

Boys U-14: Hassan Usmani bt Ruhab Faisal 1-4, 4-2, 4-1; Omer Jawas bt Abdur Rehman 4-0, 4-0.
