LONDON: Prime Minister Clement Attlee, announcing in the Parliament today [Oct 24] austerity cuts, totalling 280 million sterling, said that 30 million sterling would be cut from the Defence Bill, 35 million sterling from housing expenditure, and announced a ten million sterling saving on the National Health Plan by the imposition of a charge for prescriptions, hitherto free. In a crowded, tense House, the Prime Minister said prices of some less essential foods would go up. These would include dried and frozen eggs and rations.

At the end of the winter, price control of fish would be removed and the present subsidy eliminated. In February the subsidy on animal feeding stuffs, now running at the rate of 36 million annually, would be abolished. — News agencies

He was speaking at the laying of the corner stone of the new million dollars United Nations Headquarters here and celebrating the fourth anniversary of the Atlantic Charter.
