HAZARDOUS BUSINESSES: Recently, a fire broke out at a small petrol pump operating in Karachi’s Shah Faisal Colony area. Thankfully, it was put out in time; otherwise, it would have caused massive destruction and loss of lives. The tragic episode is a stark reminder of the need to take action against those indul-ging in hazardous commercial activities without taking into account the broader impact of their actions. The relevant authorities should take swift action aga-inst such businesses that are operating in residential areas. Relocating such enter-prises from residential areas to designated commercial zones should be seriously considered to avoid any mishap in future.

NAZIMABAD ROAD: The condition of road in Nazimabad No. 3 from Chandni Chowk to Block 2 has deteriorated with time. The potholes and uneven patches cause traffic congestion and increase the risk of accidents. The bumpy ride damages the vehicles as well. The relevant authorities should take due action. As such, removing barriers at various junctions, and repairing the damaged road will substantially improve traffic flow, ensuring a hassle-free commute.

MATTER OF CONFIDENTIALITY: The annual confidential report (ACR) has always been a feature of government service. When I joined government service over 40 years ago, the head of the department used to gather the particulars of the subordinates and send the report every year. What was reported would not be communicated unless there were adverse remarks against the person which one had to answer for. This was an annual routine. As things stand today, for the last few years now, people have been bringing the ACR forms to their department heads to be filled there and then. Once filled, the forms are handed back to them so that they could submit the same themselves. The practice of filing ACRs should be done away with, instead of making a mockery of it.
