The first day of the new school year had arrived, and Mariam was out with her father, shopping for new stationery and art supplies. Mariam was a brilliant student at school and a gifted artist at heart. She had a natural talent for art and enjoyed both painting and drawing. Her paintings were colourful, expressive and carried a rich message.

But despite being such a talented artist, Mariam was timid and never had the confidence to share her art with anyone, except for her parents or her best friend, Zara.

The next day at school, Zara greeted Mariam with exciting yet exhilarating news. Zara retrieved a glossy pamphlet and gave it to Mariam.

Confused, Mariam held onto it and asked, “What’s this, Zara?”

Zara enthusiastically said, “Just read the first line!”

Even with more confusion at hand, Mariam read aloud: “International Art Competition 2024. Submit your best artwork for a chance to meet world-famous artists and have your artwork featured in five different countries! The first 10 winners will be awarded with a cash prize!”

Reading this, a wave of excitement rushed over Mariam’s body. This was the opportunity of a lifetime! But then, the fear inside her resurfaced.

“I ... I don’t know, Zara,” Mariam stammered. “There are so many talented artists out there. What if I’m not good enough?”

“Mariam, you’re one of the most talented people I know. Your art is amazing and I love how you convert thoughts into art!” Zara put a comforting hand on her shoulder. “You don’t have to decide right now. But just think about it, okay? The world deserves to see what a great artist you are!”

Mariam wanted to believe Zara, but her mind was swirling with doubts. Their conversation was cut short by the ringing bell that meant the start of classes. Mrs Ahmed, the art teacher, entered the class with a new set of art projects for this term. She instructed the students to begin their projects and went around the class offering guidance. When she reached Mariam’s desk, her eyes lingered on the beautiful sketch Mariam was working on.

“Mariam, this is beautiful!” Mrs Ahmed remarked admiringly. “I’d like to speak with you after the class.”

Mariam nodded anxiously. “Yes, sure ma’am.”

The bell rang, and Mariam’s heart raced. Mrs Ahmed gently said, “Come with me, Mariam,” and guided her into the office. She sat across from her and asked, “Mariam, your work is amazing, and I have seen how talented you are. But you are hesitant to share it. Why?”

“I’m not sure if it’s good enough,” she admitted quietly. “I love painting and sketching, but I’m scared to share it because, what if it’s not as good as I think it is?”

Mrs Ahmed leaned forward, “Mariam,” she began gently, “art isn’t about being perfect or better than someone else. It’s about expressing the beauty within. Every artist, no matter how talented, has doubts. But the courage to create and share despite those doubts is what truly makes an artist. Your work is beautiful because it’s uniquely yours. Don’t let your doubts keep you from showing the world what only you can create.”

Mrs Ahmed proceeded encouragingly, “There’s an art competition coming up that could be a great opportunity for you. Mariam, this competition is a chance to move forward and share your talent with the world. Sometimes, stepping out of our comfort zones is the greatest win.”

“I don’t know,” Mariam said softly, fidgeting with her fingers. Mrs Ahmed gently placed a reassuring hand on Mariam’s shoulder. “Mariam, take the first step this time, you’ll be amazed to see how easy the next one becomes!”

Mariam left Mrs Ahmed’s room, feeling anxious but also hopeful.

That evening, Mariam shared Mrs Ahmed’s advice with her parents. Both reassured her that no matter what her decision, they’ll stand by her. They knew that she has all the talent someone dreams of.

The next day in art class, Mariam felt a rush of excitement and determination as Mrs Ahmed asked the students to share their work. Mariam took a deep breath and showed her beautiful landscape painting. Her classmates responded with immense love and appreciation for her work, boosting Mariam’s confidence.

Mariam was determined to participate in the art competition, whether she won or not. Channelling all her talent and creativity into this project, Mariam created a masterpiece like none other. She painted a beautiful landscape with silhouettes that reflected a journey of growth, self-belief and determination — much like her own. When the submission day finally came, Mariam handed over her piece, feeling accomplished. She was grateful for the experience and the tremendous support she had gotten from her parents, Zara and Mrs Ahmed.

The result was to be announced a few days later. Mariam was composed, she was calm all this time. Soon the results were sent to all the schools who participated. The next day, during the assembly, the results were to be announced, Sara awaited the announcement of the winners, around a myriad of young talents each uniquely different.

Her deep trance was suddenly interrupted by her name being called for the winner from her school. At that moment, Mariam experienced disbelief and joy, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude and self-assurance took over her. She realised that with little encouragement and some self-belief, her dream had come true.
