SWAT: In a step to further promote archaeology, the Government Postgraduate Jahanzeb College, Saidu Sharif, has opened the department of archaeology.

Arshad Khan, secretary information and public relations, accompanied by Dr Luca M, a professor from Venice University and Director of Archaeology Commission in Italy, especially attended the inaugural ceremony.

The event drew a distinguished group of guests, including Inayatullah Khan, director higher education department, Mohammad Salim, principal Jahanzeb College, Subhan Gul, chairman of newly-established archaeology department, Isa Khan, chairman of college’s English department, and a large number of teachers and students.

Speaking on the occasion, Arshad Khan, also an alumnus of Jahanzeb College, spoke proudly of the college’s historical significance since its founding in 1952 by Mian Gul Jahanzeb, a pivotal figure in Swat’s educational legacy.

He emphasised that the new department would strengthen the institution’s academic offerings and contribute to preserving the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Dr Luca highlighted Swat’s archaeological wealth, especially in areas like Barikot and Buddh Kada in Saidu Sharif, and committed to offering two honorary lectures monthly for the archaeology students, bringing global archaeological perspectives to the classroom.

Addressing the audience, Inayatullah Khan, Mohammad Salim and Subhan Gul expressed their enthusiasm for the department’s future contributions to the field of archaeology.

The ceremony concluded with secretary Arshad Khan and Prof Luca M presenting shields to sociology students in recognition of their achievements at the academic expo, underscoring the institution’s commitment to honoring academic excellence.
