BAHAWALNAGAR: The district police on Sunday claimed to have arrested a man for subjecting toacid attack his mother-in-law and ex-wife, who got divorce from him through court, at Khichiwala.

The FIR registered with Khichiwala police stated that Abida Parveen of Faisal Colony had contracted marriage with the suspect, Abid, of the same area, about 17 years ago, and the couple had six children.

It says Abid would often torture Parveen, who filed a divorce plea in the court that accepted it four days ago.

After divorce, the woman started living with her mother.

On Saturday last, Abid allegedly barged into his in-laws’ house in the wee hours, threw acid on his ex-wife and her mother while they were asleep, and fled away.

DPO’s spokesperson says the police arrested the suspect when he was trying to flee from the city, adding that the women affected by the acid attack were undergoing treatment at the DHQ Hospital.

Hospital sources say that around 45 per cent of the victims’ bodies, including their face and neck, suffered acid burns and their condition was still critical.
