RAWALPINDI: A sub-inspector of the National Highways and Motorway Police lost his life after being hit by a van while assisting a stranded vehicle on the Hazara Expressway on Tuesday.

A police spokesman said sub-inspector Shabbir Ahmed and head constable Sohail Malik were assisting a damaged vehicle near Battagram when they were hit by a pick-up van. As a result they were critically injured.

They said the injured were taken to District Headquarters Hospital, Battagram, and later to Ayub Medical College, Abbottabad, but SI Shabbir succumbed to his injuries there.

His funeral prayers were attended by Inspector General of National Highways and Motorway Police Salman Chaudhry, additional IG north region Yasin Farooq, senior officers and a large number of local residents.

A guard of honour was also presented to his coffin, underscoring the respect and honour owed to this brave officer.

IG Salman Chaudhry extended condolences to the family of the martyr, who is survived by a widow, three daughters and two sons, and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured head constable.
