Chenab embankment approved to protect Hafizabad villages

GUJRAT: A 2km long embankment will be constructed at a cost of Rs 200 million to save agricultural land of six villages from the erosion of Chenab river in Hafizabad district.

The irrigation department has also approved the scheme after recommendation by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA)t.

The scheme has formally been approved at the Divisional Development Working Party with Gujranwala Commissioner Naveed Haider Sheerazi in the chair whereas Hafizabad Deputy Commissioner Abdul Razzaq also participated in the meeting through video link.

The commissioner said that the six villages, including Mehmood Pur, in the outskirts of Hafizabad city have been facing erosion by the river 8 km down stream.

However, he said with the establishment of embankment at least 6000 people would be protected from the danger of erosion as well as flooding. Gujranwala region Director Development Abdul Rauf also briefed the participants about the project.

The meeting decided to expedite the tendering process as well as ensuring the use of quality material in the execution.
