LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) has been asked to set the minimum wage at $1,000 across all provinces in Pakistan to help eradicate poverty.

Fehmeed Nawaz Ansari, a lawyer from Faisalabad, filed a writ petition in the LHC, noting that Pakistan was a British colony before independence and adopted most British laws, including the justice system.

In his two-page petition, the lawyer argues that wages in Pakistan should also be on par with those in the United States and United Kingdom.

He contends that a minimum wage of $1,000 per month would increase citizens’ purchasing power, which, in turn, would attract foreign investment to the country.

The petition further claims that this increase could grow the country’s economy to between $1,000 and $1,200 billion.

The petitioner requested the court to grant his plea and order the government to raise the minimum wage to $1,000 nationwide.
