THE CORRECT MOVE

THE CORRECT MOVE: The 26th Constitutional Amendment has faced criticism from certain political as well as legal elements even though there is much that can be said in favour of the amendment. First, a process in which the chief justice had the absolute discretion in the appointment of judges to the Supreme Court has been substituted by a procedure in which the sole discretion of an indiv-idual has been curtailed. Similarly, the nomination of the chief justice solely based on seniority has been changed to an improved procedure that is based on a combination of merit and seniority, and is under parliamentary oversight. One wonders what all this fuss is about.

DANGEROUS U-TURN: Motorists coming from Islamabad via the newly-constructed Margalla Avenue have to turn left and take a U-turn to go towards Taxila. This is an extremely dangerous turn, as the traffic moves at a high speed. This can result in serious, even fatal, accidents. The authorities concerned should carve out a safe U-turn urgently.

FROM SUKKUR TO ROHRI: The Lansdowne Bridge connects the twin cities of Rohri and Sukkur. However, due to the maintenance of Sukkur Barrage, the bridge has been facing acute traffic congestion. There is literally no way left to go to Sukkur from Rohri. People having a medical emergency and the daily office-goers have been facing serious problems. The relevant authorities should look into the matter and address the issue.

QUID PRO QUO: This refers to the letter ‘Inherently wrong’ (Oct 24). Since politicians now have the power to appoint judges, the judges should be given the power to select future presidents, governors, prime ministers as well as chief ministers. Indeed, this would allow the judiciary to keep a check on executive and legislative overreach.
