HYDERABAD: Three candidates backed by Pakistan Peoples Party and two supported by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf won local government election in five union committees of different town municipal corporations (TMCs) that remained by and large peaceful in Hyderabad on Thursday.

Two seats of UC chairman and one seat of vice chairman of union committees were clinched by Pakistan Peoples Party- and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-backed candidates, respectively, as per unofficial results of the polls. Low turnout was reported.

PPP’s Istehsan Barkat won seat of chairman of UC-125, Hussainabad TMC, by beating PTI-backed Mehboob Ali Abro. Young Istehsan (310 votes) contested the seat, which fell vacant after his father Barkat Babar’s death. Abro (217 votes) who was in the run as independent candidate was backed by PTI, according to unofficial results.

In UC-140 of the same TMC, PPP’s Zulfikar Janwari and Imran Baloch won seats of chairman and vice chairman with 622 votes against panel of Mukhtiar Ali and Saeed Chandio, who were polled 599 votes.

In Paretabad TMC, PTI’s Adnan Rasheed won seat of vice-chairman of UC-51 by securing 1086 votes while PPP’s Farhan Rajput was polled 899.

Adnan Rasheed was contesting the seat to meet requirements under electoral laws to continue as Paretabad TMC chairman. He was earlier elected Paretabad TMC chairman but was required to contest direct election within six months.

General councilor ward-1 in UC-46 of Paretabad TMC was won by PTI’s Haris Ahmed against TLP’s Alam Ghauri. Activists of the winning parties celebrated the victory by dancing in the streets and distributing sweets.
