If you have difficulty accepting myths passed down by elders, struggle with managing your parents, or often think differently from those around you, then Red One is the film for you. This exciting addition to the holiday-action genre blends Christmas cheer with action and comedy. The film brings vibes of the Jumanji movies, sharing the same director and leading actor.
Dwayne, ‘The Rock’ Johnson, joins former Captain America Chris Evans in a role far from Steve Rogers. The 123-minute film features supporting performances from Lucy Liu and JK Simmons and brings together spy thrills and Christmas warmth. Liu’s character, the boss of The Rock’s character Callum, adds depth to the storyline. At the same time, Simmons delivers a memorable performance as an unconventional Santa Claus (code-named Red One), who is much more than the jolly figure from traditional Christmas tales.
Set during the festive season, Red One transports you to a mythological world. The movie begins with a ‘naughty’ boy telling his cousins a supposed myth about Santa. Problems arise as the boy grows older and gets entangled in a plot involving Santa Claus’s abduction. With Christmas only hours away, a race against time begins, and as the Head of Security at the North Pole, Dwayne Johnson’s character takes no nonsense.
Having worked with Santa for hundreds of years, he takes charge and employs modern espionage techniques to bring Santa back. Otherwise, Santa’s boss would need to convince world leaders to cancel Christmas. Chris Evans, a.k.a. Jack, is a tracker for the culprits as the mission to save the holiday unfolds. Jack also has a son with whom he shares a strained relationship. Over time, Jack realises his mistakes and not only bonds with his son but also begins to believe in the reality of Santa.
Johnson is known for his larger-than-life roles and brings power and humour to the screen. Evans shows a different side, without his Captain America shield, and counters Johnson with wit and heart. The audience also learns about Santa’s brother and their complex shared history, adding depth to the story.
Red One successfully blends action, comedy and holiday fantasy, combining fast-paced, action-packed sequences set in whimsical, Christmas-inspired locations.
For anyone looking for a holiday movie with an unconventional, action-packed edge, Red One is a refreshingly bold choice that stands out among traditional seasonal films and will likely become a new Christmas classic for action fans. Beware, naughty kids, this isn’t a ‘typical kid’ Christmas movie, and action fans, get ready for a holiday adventure.
