BAHAWALPUR: Jallah Araian police in Lodhran district claimed to have averted theft of the Multan Electric Power Company (Mepco) material worth hundreds of thousands of rupees loaded on a private truck at Basti Malook, arresting a suspect and booking two local company officials.

According to police, a truck driver, Abdul Ghafoor, impersonating a Mepco employee, attempted to take away the material, including thousands of single- and three-phase electricity meters, transformers, cables and other electric gadgets, in a private vehicle.

However, a police party intercepted the truck on a bridge and during checking recovered the stolen material, arresting the suspect.

The police said that the suspect, Ghafoor, had a bogus letter allegedly issued by a Mepco sub-divisional officer (SDO) with a fake seal. They said the Mepco material was to be transported to Lahore in connivance with two company officials. The police officials say that the arrested suspect is being interrogated and some other Mepco officials may also be involved in the scandal.
