Who doesn’t love watching butterflies fluttering here and there? Almost all of us adore seeing them. Unfortunately, it’s becoming quite rare to spot these enchanting creatures. Perhaps you might catch a glimpse of one in your garden or a nearby park, but sadly, this is a rare occurrence.

So, I thought, why not create some butterflies from paper? You can place them around your home, in a variety of vibrant colours, to bring that magical touch indoors. So let’s get started with today’s craft!

Directions:

  1. Start by cutting out a square piece of coloured paper. The size of the square will determine the size of your butterfly. For example, I used a 3x3-inch square, but you can choose smaller or larger dimensions depending on your preference; see picture 1.

  2. Fold the paper diagonally from both opposite corners, creating an ‘X’ crease. Then, fold it lengthwise and width-wise to form a ‘+’ crease. Ensure all folds are crisp and visible then press the paper, refer to pictures 2, 3, 4 and 5.

  3. You should now have a triangular shape. Fold the right corner over to meet the left corner, pictures 6 and 7.

  4. Hold the triangle securely and cut a circular edge along the right side, as in pictures 8 and 9.

  5. Open the folded paper and separate the top layer. Fold this layer upwards, picture 10.

  6. Flip the paper over to the back. You’ll notice an uncut triangle on the backside. Fold this triangle towards the straight edge in the middle, and then fold the tip downwards, as in pictures 11 and 12.

  7. You will notice some tightness in the fold from the straight side as you pull it upwards. This is fine because it helps shape the butterfly. Pinch this fold tightly to secure it and prevent it from loosening, pictures 13 and 14.

Your butterfly is ready! Make as many as you like and use them in a variety of creative ways, on greeting cards, artificial flowers or any decoration. This simple, yet charming, craft adds a delightful touch wherever you place it.
