KARACHI: Two young brothers drowned while four others were rescued after their dinghy overturned upon striking a pole in the sea near Ibrahim Hyderi.

Officials said that the group was on their way to attend an annual fair at Bhindar Island.

Ibrahim Hyderi SHO Fahadul Hasan told Dawn that six people had gone to attend the annual ‘mela’ at Bhindar Island on Sunday. However, their boat capsized when it struck a pole and the police received information of the incident at around 6:45pm. He said that four persons were rescued.

The area SHO said they had responded to an emergency call while the incident occurred in the jurisdiction of Docks police of South Zone.

DIG-South Syed Asad Raza told Dawn that body of Mohammed Nabeel was recovered while a search was underway to recover the body of Mohammed Sameer.

He said that Waqas, Hammad, Pervez and Ali Mohammed were rescued.

He said Nabeel was a resident of Block-4 in Clifton whose body was handed over to the Rescue-1122 team at Ibrahim Hyderi.

Saeed Baloch, general secretary of the Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum told Dawn that the victims’ father, Bilal, owned an ice factory in Ibrahim Hyderi.

Mr Baloch also confirmed that the victims were not fishermen. He said generally, residents of Ibrahim Hyderi and other localities of the metropolis tended to visit the island annually during the annual fair.
