SARGODHA: The University of Sargodha (UoS) held two events addressing diverse yet crucial themes: advancements in physics and materials science, and the eradication of violence against women.

In the Department of Physics, a one-day symposium titled ‘Emerging Trends in Physics and Materials Science’ brought together researchers, faculty and students.

Esteemed speakers included Dr Wajahat M Qazi from Comstats University, Lahore, and Dr Muhammad Naveed from the Beijing Institute of Technology.

Dr Qazi emphasised the need for fostering a research-oriented culture among the youth, urging them to focus on scientific advancements. He highlighted the role of comprehensive policies in promoting research within Pakistan.

Dr Naveed encouraged students to explore international research opportunities and contribute to innovations addressing global challenges.

Prof Dr Amir Ali and Prof Dr Muhammad Anwarul Haq reaffirmed the university’s dedication to inspiring scientific inquiry and broadening intellectual horizons.

On a different note, the Department of Sociology and Criminology observed the International Day for the Eradication of Violence Against Women with a seminar, which was attended by faculty, students and notable participants including Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mian Ghulam Yaseen, Qaisra Ismail from the Sargodha Chamber of Commerce, Samiya, in charge of District Harassment Cell, and advocate Muhammad Naeem.

Prof Yasin reaffirmed the University of Sargodha’s commitment to not only providing quality education but also promoting the values of equality and justice. He said that every person has a responsibility to contribute towards establishing peace, preventing violence and fostering an environment of respect and security.

Qaisra Ismail underscored the significance of women’s economic empowerment in eradicating violence. She said that economic stability equips women with independence, which plays a vital role in ending violence. There is an urgent need for collective efforts to safeguard women’s rights.

She highlighted her institution’s efforts in ensuring the safety of women in workplaces and stressed the importance of implementing existing laws. She added that to eliminate harassment at the societal level, we need stringent policies and active public participation.

Advocate Naeem shed light on the legal aspects of violence against women, calling for greater awareness of women’s rights and the effective utilisation of legal resources.
