VPN registration

Published December 6, 2024

THIS is with reference to the report “PTA decides not to ban VPNs over ‘lack of legal grounds’” (Dec 1). Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) offer numerous advantages, inclu-ding enhanced security and privacy by encrypting internet traffic and masking the user’s Internet Protocol (IP) address, which protect data from hackers, internet service providers (ISPs) and third parties. They are especially beneficial when using public Wi-Fi or accessing sensitive inform-ation. VPNs also allow users to bypass geographical restrictions, enabling access to restricted content, such as region-locked streaming services or censored websites.

They are invaluable for remote work, providing secure access to company networks. Additionally, VPNs can help users find region-specific discounts and ensure anonymity online. However, there are some drawbacks. VPNs can reduce internet speed due to encryption and rerouting traffic through distant servers.

High-quality VPN services often come with a cost, while free options may have security flaws or limited functionality. Some providers may log into user data, compromising privacy if they are unreliable. Moreover, certain websites or applications, like banking services, may block VPN usage. Setting up a VPN can be challenging for non-technical users, and in some countries, VPN use is restricted or illegal, posing legal risks.

To prevent unlawful, unwanted, or immoral activities, user registration should be mandatory to ensure accountability and discourage misuse. Despite these disadv-antages, VPNs remain a powerful tool, but only when chosen and used responsibly.
