DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Gomal Medical College (GMC) conferred 68 degrees of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) on young doctors at its 6th convocation held here on Saturday.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur was the chief guest at the ceremony, which was also attended by students, parents, local elected representatives, officers from the divisional and district administrations, and others.
While addressing the event, he announced that a campus of Khyber Medical University would soon be established in DI Khan as the provincial government was taking steps for improvement of basic healthcare in underprivileged districts. He praised the remarkable achievements of GMC in a short span of time.
He urged the doctors to treat the ailing with kindness and to approach the medical profession as a mission of serving humanity, rather than just a job. During the convocation, 68 medical graduates were awarded degrees, while 18 students received gold medals for their outstanding achievements.
The chief minister congratulated the graduating students, their parents, and teachers, and commended the GMC administration for successfully organising the event. He expressed the view that doctors should choose to serve in underprivileged areas where their services were most needed.
Mr Gandapur mentioned that steps were being taken to increase the admission quota in medical colleges for students from merged districts. Additionally, local individuals would be recruited to provide better healthcare services in these areas.
Earlier, the chief minister inaugurated three state-of-the-art laboratories at GMC, including an IT lab established in collaboration with Khyber Medical University at a cost of Rs 90 million.
