PESHAWAR: Jamaat-i-Islami Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has criticised Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf-led provincial government allegedly for paralysing the local government system in the province.

Inayatullah Khan, former senior provincial minister and ameer JI KP (North), while addressing a press conference at Peshawar Press Club on Monday, accused the government of violating the constitutional rights of the elected local government representatives from opposition parties by withholding their funds.

He claimed that the government had released funds to only PTI-affiliated chairmen in 56 tehsils, while over 4,000 representatives from other parties were deprived of their rightful share.

“The PTI government has crossed all limits to victimise opposition parties,” Mr Khan said, adding, “we will not tolerate this injustice and will take all possible measures to protect the rights of our representatives.”

The JI leader announced that his party would stage a protest demonstration on December 18 against the government’s discriminatory policies. He also revealed that a petition had been filed in Peshawar High Court against the government’s decision to withhold funds for the opposition representatives.

The PTI government has been accused of amending the local government act to favour its own representatives, thereby crippling the local government system in the province. Mr Khan termed this move as a “gross injustice and a violation of the Constitution”.
