As Dalia pushed open the door, the bells chimed, indicating her arrival to the people inside. She stepped inside quietly, noticing the gloomy mood and made her way towards her mother, who was serving a pastry to a customer.

“What happened?” she whispered to her mother as she went to wash her hands.

“It’s the new bakery that has opened a month ago,” her mother murmured.

“Yeah, I saw. There’s quite a lot of customers there,” Dalia said, noticing the lack of customers in their own bakery. “If the situation continues, what are we going to do? Our business would run out like this,” Dalia asked as she stood in their struggling bakery, surrounded by many empty shelves and emptier tables.

Her parents had poured their heart into this business, but ever since a big supermarket chain had moved into town, their customers had dwindled and today she noticed it more than ever as she saw a worried frown on her father. Since their bakery’s opening and through all of its ups and downs, he was a pillar for both her and her mother.

“Every cloud has a silver lining, sweetie. We just have to find it,” Dalia’s mother smiled at her as she began arranging some cakes.

Dalia’s mind swirled with unease. Different ideas engulfed her mind as she tried to think of some way to save her family legacy.

Therefore, that night, she forced her parents to brainstorm some ideas. She knew they couldn’t compete with the supermarket’s prices, but they could surely offer something unique. At last, an idea clicked and Dalia proposed revamping the menu to focus on traditional, artisanal treats.

Her father, the ever-sceptic, hesitated, but when her mother’s eyes sparkled and she clicked her fingers, “That’s it! We can highlight our heritage and make our bakery a destination.”

Father agreed with a shake of his head and a small smile. And thereafter, they got to work. They renovated the bakery, perfected recipes, paid some local artists to paint vibrant murals, partnered with nearby farmers for fresh ingredients, hosted baking workshops and whatnot.

Gradually, their customers returned as children dragged their parents to the bakery. Food bloggers raved about their unique recipes and that also led to tourists discovering their hidden gem.

As the bakery flourished, it was as if the town began to revive too. Other small businesses followed their lead, emphasising local charm. Within a couple of months, the bakery became the heart of the town, such that one day as the bell chimed, Dalia looked up from serving a group of girls their coffees. It was the supermarket’s manager. Dalia hurriedly did her work, curiosity killing her.

That is when her mother returned from her father’s cabin where the manager was led and a hushed conversation was happening.

Dalia asked her mother, “Mum! What’s going on?”

“He has come to discuss a partnership opportunity!” her mother delightedly informed her. “Who would have thought that losing customers would lead us to find our true purpose?”

Dalia heaved a sigh of relief and smiled, knowing that sometimes, adversity hides a blessing in disguise.
